Government Tech Initiative: Government launched 2 digital platforms to make the addressing system easier

Digipin (Digital Postal Index Number) is a geo-coded, grid-based digital address system that is open-source and interopeable. It has been developed by the Department of Posts in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and NRSC, ISRO.

It is a basis for the postal department’s approach to offer the address-e-e-servis (AAAS)-which is a series of address data management services to support safe and efficient interactions between users, government institutions and private sector organizations.

‘Learn your Digipin’ portal enables users to achieve its Digipin based on an accurate geographical location, and inputs latitude and longitude coordinates to obtain the respective Digipin and vice versa. This initiative simplifies the location mapping, increases logistics and emergency response, and ensures final-meal delivery, especially in rural and low-service areas.

The Postal Department of the Ministry of Communications said that the Digipin system, which has been officially reviewed and adopted by the cloud work group at the address under the National Land Statue Policy 2022, is now available to all ministries, state governments, institutions for integration in their workflows and users for their own use.

Including Digipin as an additional address characteristic will help in availing GIS capabilities, which will cost the foundation of the future GIS-based digitization of the future GIS-based digitization of service distribution in various organizations in a cost effective manner.

Digipine will increase the location accuracy in various fields by providing accurate geographical coordinates, ensure accurate service distribution and reduce emergency response time.

The six -digit PIN code system launched in 1972 has served as the backbone of India’s postal distribution system. However, recognizing the need to modernize and refine its geographical accuracy, the department began a national geoofing exercise in all postal areas to keep all the pin code boundaries of the country in geographical context.

Based on this, the Department of Posts has now launched ‘Know your PIN Code’ web application, which allows users to identify the correct PIN code based on location and submit feedback on the accuracy of PIN code for continuous refinement of the pin code dataset using GNSS location facilities.

Geo-Fenned PIN Code Boundary Dataset has also been uploaded on the open government data platform under the title “All India Pin Code Boundary Jio-Jasan”. With this double launch, the Department of Posts leads its role not only as a postal service provider but also as an important promoter of the Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for India.
