The Calcutta High Court has given an important verdict on a petition filed on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti on the historic Red Road in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. The court has directed the organizers to choose an alternative place, refusing to allow the program to organize the program on Red Road.
What is the matter?
The petitioner filed a petition in the High Court seeking permission to recite Hanuman Chalisa on Red Road between 5 am and 11 am on 12 April 2025.
- Around 3,000 people were expected to attend the event.
- The police had suggested an alternative site for the event citing traffic, public inconvenience and law and order problems.
Petitioner’s argument
- The petitioner claimed that on March 31, Namaz was allowed to offer Namaz at the same site on the occasion of Eid.
- He also informed that every year big government programs like Durga Puja Carnival are also organized on Red Road.
- Additionally, the petitioner said that this land is under the authority of the Indian Army and he had obtained permission from the army for the event.
Court hearing
A division bench of Chief Justice TS Shiv Gyanam and Justice Chaitali Chatterjee (Das) said that “any other place should be selected for the event instead of Red Road.”
- The bench upheld the order of the single bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh that refused to allow the program on Red Road.
- The court said that for the first time an attempt is being made to organize an event at this place, so it is necessary that law and order, traffic and administrative aspects are considered.
State Government and Advocate General argument
Kishore Dutta, Advocate General of West Bengal, opposed the petitioner’s demand.
