News India Live, Digital Desk : Indian Cricket Team : As difficult as it is to make a place in the Indian cricket team, it is more difficult to retain that place. The cut-throat competition here is such that sometimes even excellent performance is not a guarantee of your career. The biggest and perhaps the most unfortunate example of this is batsman Karun Nair, whose story still surprises cricket fans. Now, former Indian team captain Ajinkya Rahane has broken his silence on this issue and said that Karun Nair should have got another chance before being dropped from the team.

What is Karun Nair’s story?

Remember the Chennai Test of 2016. While playing against England, this young batsman from Karnataka had achieved a feat which only Virender Sehwag had been able to do before him – a triple century in Test cricket. Karun played a historic inning of 303 unbeaten runs. At that time it seemed that India had got another reliable and big scorer batsman in the middle order.

But no one had imagined what happened after this. After his record-breaking innings, Karun played a few more matches, but his performance was mediocre, after which he was dropped from the team. The surprising thing is that he never got a chance to return to the Indian Test team.

What did Ajinkya Rahane say?

During an interview, when Rahane was asked about Karun Nair, he expressed his views very honestly. Rahane said, “He (Karun) should definitely have got another chance. Someone who has scored 300 runs, you cannot directly drop him in the next series. I don’t know what was going on in the selectors’ mind or what decision the captain and coach took. But if someone scores 300 runs, he should definitely get the next full season to cement his place in the team.”

Rahane further added that due to the team combination and the circumstances at that time, some decisions had to be taken, but it was very unfortunate for Karun.

A big question that still persists

This statement of Ajinkya Rahane revives the old debate whether talents in Indian cricket are given enough time and opportunities to prove their worth? The case of Karun Nair shows how a sportsperson can fade into obscurity soon after reaching the top.

This statement is also important because when Karun was dropped from the team, Rahane was also an important part of the team. His admission that Karun should have been treated better gives a new perspective to this entire matter.
