High Voltage Drama in Delhi: Rahul Gandhi Climbs Barricade, Waves Tricolour as Priyanka Gandhi Detained in Mega EC Protest

Central Delhi transformed into a political fortress on Tuesday as the INDIA bloc’s scheduled march to the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters erupted into intense dramatic showdowns. Led by Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, hundreds of opposition lawmakers, senior party functionaries, and cadre attempted to march toward Nirvachan Sadan demanding the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged voter roll manipulations and Form 6 modifications.

Rahul Gandhi Scales Barricades, Waves Tricolour

Tensions spiked near Akashvani Bhavan and Patel Chowk when multi-layered police barricades and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel blocked the protesting MPs. In dramatic visuals captured on live broadcasts, Rahul Gandhi broke past security cordons, climbed atop a multi-tiered iron police barricade, and waved the Indian national flag amidst thunderous chants of “Loktantra Bachao” (Save Democracy) and anti-CEC slogans. Addressing gathered workers and media from the elevated structure, Gandhi accused the ruling dispensation of weaponizing central institutions and turning the national capital into an administrative garrison to shield the election chief from accountability.

Priyanka Gandhi and Senior Opposition MPs Detained

As security personnel moved in to disperse the gathering and enforce prohibitory orders under Section 144, scuffles broke out along Ashoka Road. Delhi Police detained several frontline opposition leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, KC Venugopal, Deepender Singh Hooda, and TMC MP Mahua Moitra, forcibly escorting them into police detention buses bound for outer district stations.

Speaking from inside the police vehicle, Priyanka Gandhi condemned the police clampdown, asserting that the opposition would not be intimidated by administrative muscle:

“The Modi government is using the police as a shield for the Election Commission. When millions of voters are deleted through questionable backdoors and the Supreme Court pulls up the Commission, asking questions is our constitutional right. Arresting us will not silence the voice of the people.”

Protests Spread to Parliament and State Capitals

The Delhi confrontation triggered cascading disruptions inside legislative corridors and regional centers. Opposition floor managers halted ongoing parliamentary committee meetings, raising slogans against the high-handed treatment of elected representatives. Meanwhile, parallel demonstrations erupted outside regional Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) offices in Lucknow, Patna, Mumbai, and Kolkata, signaling that the opposition’s confrontation with the Election Commission will continue to intensify both on the streets and in upcoming legislative sessions.
