Mythological fast story of Mohini Ekadashi: Story of Dhanpal and his son
According to mythology, in ancient times, a very beautiful city named Bhadravati was situated on the banks of river Saraswati. This city was ruled by King Dhritiman. In this kingdom there lived a very rich and charitable Vaishya named Dhanpal. Dhanapal was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. He had a total of 5 sons, out of which the youngest son Dhrishtabuddhi had fallen into very bad company and was a great sinner.
Forced to wander from door to door due to bad deeds
Dhrishtabuddhi was heavily involved in gambling and other wrongdoings. Due to these habits, he started wasting his father’s hard-earned money like water. Disturbed and frustrated by these actions of his younger son, Dhanpal threw him out of the house. After being thrown out of the house, Dhrishtabuddhi started facing many setbacks. When he ran out of food, he resorted to theft. For this, the king first put him in jail and then threw him out of the city limits forever.
Solution of Maharishi Kaundinya and attainment of Vaikuntha
One day, Dhrishtabuddhi, suffering from hunger and thirst, reached the ashram of Maharishi Kaundinya while wandering in the dense forest. Going there, he deeply regretted his actions and asked the Maharishi for a way to get rid of his terrible sins. Then the kind sage Kaundinya told him the great solution of fasting on ‘Mohini Ekadashi’ of Shukla Paksha of Vaishakh month. As per the advice of the sage, Dhrishtabuddhi fasted on Mohini Ekadashi with full rituals and true devotion. Due to the glory of this miraculous fast, all the sins of his previous births were washed away and after his death, he directly attained ‘Vaikuntha’, the supreme abode of Lord Vishnu.
