Onion is an important and popular material in Indian cuisine. It not only enhances the taste of food, but also provides many health benefits. Onion is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, which are beneficial for heart, skin and immunity. However, many people experience irritation in the eyes while cutting onions, which is a common problem for anyone working in the kitchen. The main reason for this is a chemical called alile sulfide present in onions. While cutting onion, this chemical is evaporated into the air and turns into sulfuric acid.
This acid irritates the delicate surface of our eyes, causing irritation and tears. Actually, tears act as a natural security shield against this acid. Some easy and effective measures can be taken to reduce this problem.
Easy ways to stop tears while cutting onions
Keep the chopped onion in the fridge for 30 minutes before cutting. Chemicals react less while cutting, causing less bursts while cutting.
Soak it in cold water for a few minutes before cutting the onion. This reduces the activation of onion chemicals and reduces the problem of irritation and tears in the eyes.
Keep a moist cloth on your face while cutting. This will not reach your eyes directly to the chemicals present in the onion.
If your eyes start burning, wash it with cold water immediately. This will give coolness to the eyes and reduce irritation.
Use a specially designed knife.
Nowadays special technology bladed knives are available. These blades have a low effect of chemicals present in onions, due to which less gases are released while cutting and also reduced eye irritation. Cutting onions can be easier and more comfortable using such knives.
