Increased uncertainty over 8th pay commission, delay in formation increased the concern of government employees

Millions of central government employees and pensioners are eagerly waiting for the formation of the 8th Central Pay Commission (8th CPC). However, there has been no official announcement on this by the government, causing an atmosphere of uncertainty and restlessness among the employees.

Expressing concern over the issue, the Staff of the National Council (JCM), an organization representing the employees, has demanded the government to set up the 8th Pay Commission as soon as possible.

Why are employees demanding?

Usually, the government forms a new pay commission to review the salaries, allowances and pension of employees every 10 years. The recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission were implemented in 2016. Now, the employees argue that due to the increased inflation and cost of living in the last few years, the real value of their salary has reduced significantly.

The Staff Side of the National Council (JCM) has also recently submitted a memorandum to the Cabinet Secretary. He says that if the commission is now formed, it will take about 18 to 24 months to prepare its recommendations, which will be implemented from January 1, 2026.

What is the importance of pay commission?

The Pay Commission not only determines the pay scale, but also reviews the allowances, pension benefits and other facilities for the employees. Its recommendations directly affect about 49 lakh central employees and 68 lakh pensioners.

Due to the silence from the government, there is also speculation that perhaps a new system (eg acroid formula) can be brought to the system of the Pay Commission. At the moment, everyone’s eyes are on the next step of the government, as this late is increasing concern about the future among the employees.
