While US President Donald Trump has imposed tariffs on India, the central government is allegedly working towards further strengthening trade relations between the two countries.
After the clash between India and China in the Galwan in 2020, the removal of some restrictions imposed on Chinese investment and trade in India is being considered and discussion is going on between the concerned departments of the two countries. Such measures have also been demanded by industrial organizations in India. The restrictions that are being considered relaxed include relaxation of visa restrictions for Chinese citizens, some tariffs on imports from China and non-tariffs, allowing some Chinese apps to operate some Chinese apps in India, resume flights between the two countries, etc. On the investment front, a proposal to provide exemption to China for investment in India is also being considered as this option is being searched as a solution to India’s growing trade deficit with China. Despite the current restrictions, China’s influence in bilateral trade is increasing. Currently, it is being considered to relax the need to seek permission from the Center to invest in India with countries bordering India border. In addition, it is also being considered to relax the need for BIS marking on electronic and IT products imported from China.
