Washington DC: Former US President and potential Republican candidate Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election has given a big indication about the Indo-US trade agreement. He indicated that if he comes to power again, America could be a ‘very important’ of America, and perhaps ‘bigger’ trade agreement than China.
Donald Trump said this while talking to reporters at his Mar-e-Lago residence in Florida. He termed the Phase-1 trade agreement signed with China during his tenure as a “spectacular”, under which China was to purchase large amounts of agricultural products from the US and agree to protect intellectual property rights.
Trump believes that high import duty only forces other countries to make a “proper” trade agreement with the US. He said, “I think India also wants to deal with us and for us it can be a big business agreement than China.” The former President also mentioned his ‘brilliant’ relations with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which was a matter of discussion during his previous term.
Trade and economic relations between India and America have always been strong, but during the Trump administration, there was also tension on tariffs on some products. The US wants to reduce its growing trade deficit from India and has been demanding better access to American products in the Indian market. However, if Donald Trump again becomes President and this huge trade agreement is realized, it will add a new chapter to the economic relations between the two countries.
