News India Live, Digital Desk: India has once again made the world realize its strength in terms of global military power. According to the latest report of Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), India has become the 5th largest military spending country in the world. Emphasizing self-reliance and modernization in the defense sector, India's total military expenditure has reached $92.1 billion (about Rs 7.6 lakh crore).
'Operation Vermillion' and huge jump in defense budget There are many important reasons behind this 8.9% increase in India's military expenditure. According to the report, 'Operation Sindoor' conducted on the Pakistan border last year played a big role in this increase. During this operation, large scale procurement of weapons and lethal equipment was done on emergency basis to keep the Indian Army fully prepared for war. Keeping in view the future challenges, the government has also allocated a huge fund of Rs 7.85 lakh crore for the defense sector in the Budget 2026-27.
Situation of China and Pakistan: Where do the neighbors stay? India's neighbors have also joined in this race of military expenditure, but the gap is very wide:
China: China, which ranks second in the world, has increased its military budget by 7.4% to $336 billion.
Pakistan: Even in the condition of poverty, Pakistan is not desisting from its activities. It has increased its military spending by 11%, but with a total expenditure of $11.9 billion it is ranked far down on the list at 31st.
Decreased dependence on Russia in arms imports Another interesting aspect has emerged in the SIPRI report. India is now gradually reducing its dependence on Russia for arms. Russia, which once had 70% share in India's total imports, has now reduced to 40%. India is now purchasing modern technology and fighter aircraft from countries like France, Israel and America, making the Indian Army more lethal and modern than ever before.
Global military spending breaks all records In the year 2025, the total military expenditure of the entire world has reached a record level of $ 2,887 billion. The US, China and Russia together cover 51% of total global spending. The Ukraine-Russia war and rising tensions in West Asia have once again pushed the entire world into an arms race.
