News India Live, Digital Desk: Ricky Ponting was very keen to bring Shreyas Iyer to Punjab Kings in the mega auction. After a forgetful campaign in 2024 and in search of improvement in the course, Punjab appointed Ponting as a coach, who first worked with captain Shreyas in Delhi Capitals. The coach-captain pair brought Delhi to the final in 2020, but lost to Mumbai Indians, who successfully defended the title.
Ponting that partnership Was keen to renewed as Punjab bid for Rs 26.75 crore to strengthen their batting line-up and get a successful captain, which gave the Kolkata Knight Riders title in 2024.
He has continued to move from where he left in Delhi as this will be the second final of Punjab and will reach the final for the first time after 11 years. Iyer has also done well with the bat, he has scored 603 runs in 16 matches and has praised Ponting’s role in increasing the confidence of the players.
Iyer said about the former Australian captain, “He is a wonderful coach who manages the players correctly and I personally feel that one thing is different among them that he treats everyone equally.”
“This gives a lot of boost to every person, whether it is junior or senior. When you know that the coach is treating everyone equally, you are positive and you get the freedom from them that you can go there and show their best capabilities.”
Talking about his role as the team leader, he said that now that he is in the title race, he will have to focus his attention to win against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final.
Iyer said, “I think the role of the captain is that you have to have the best performance in terms of performance from your players. And when we started in this tournament, we gained momentum from the beginning. After that, every player continued to move forward.”
“There are many young players in our team; they are getting their terms with the first ball, and they have done so in the entire season. That is why we have reached the finals.
“I thought my work is half. It is still not complete. Tomorrow is our match. I adopted it with this mindset. The work is half, and I have to come back tomorrow. I have to play the match again. I was thinking that recovery is important.”
