On this day, Lord Vishnu wakes up from four months of Yoga Nidra and all auspicious activities begin. On this day, the Shaligram form of Lord Vishnu is married to Tulsi Ji, hence it is also known as ‘Tulsi Vivah’.

Tulsi ji is considered to be the form of Goddess Lakshmi and there is a special tradition of worshiping her on this day. But there are many rules related to Tulsi Puja which are very important to know. One of the big questions that often comes to people’s mind is whether Tulsi Manjari (Basil seeds) should be plucked on the day of Devuthani Ekadashi or not?

What is the importance of Tulsi Manjari?

First of all it is important to know that Tulsi Manjari is very auspicious and sacred. It is also called ‘Tulsi ka Sheesh’. When the Tulsi plant is growing very well, flowers appear on it. According to religious beliefs, the arrival of Manjari on Tulsi is a sign that Tulsi ji is very happy. But it is also believed that Manjari should not be left on the plant for a long time, because it increases the burden on Tulsi ji and makes her sad, due to which the plant starts drying up.

Should one break Manjari on Devuthani Ekadashi or not?

Now coming to the main question. According to the scriptures, one should not pluck Tulsi leaves or Manjari even by mistake on the day of Devuthani Ekadashi.

There are many religious reasons behind this:

1. Mata Tulsi’s fast: It is believed that on the day of Devuthani Ekadashi, Mother Tulsi also observes a waterless fast for Lord Vishnu. They get married on this day. In such a situation, breaking any of their parts, be it a leaf or a stem, is like causing them pain.
2. Energy loss: Touching, shaking or breaking the Tulsi plant on the day of Ekadashi reduces its sattvik energy. Even touching them is prohibited on this day.
3. Mother Lakshmi’s displeasure: Tulsi ji is considered to be the form of Mother Lakshmi. Mother Lakshmi may get angry by causing any kind of trouble to her on Ekadashi, especially on the day of Devuthani Ekadashi, which can have a negative impact on the happiness and prosperity of the house.

What to do if it is necessary to break Manjari?

If too many branches have grown on your Tulsi plant and it is necessary to remove them, then the best way to do this is to pluck the branches one or two days before Ekadashi, i.e. on Navami or Dashami Tithi. If you have forgotten to do this, then you can break the Manjari after breaking the fast on Dwadashi Tithi (the next day of Ekadashi).

What to do with broken Manjari?

• Offer to Lord Vishnu: Plucked Manjari should not be thrown away. Offer it on the picture of Shaligram ji or Lord Vishnu.
• Remedies to increase wealth: Tie some dry Manjari in a red cloth and keep it in your safe or place where you keep your money. By doing this the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi remain intact.
• Grow new plants: By drying Manjari seeds, you can also grow new basil plants from them.

Therefore, on the day of Devuthani Ekadashi, worship Tulsi ji with full devotion, arrange his marriage, but do not make the mistake of breaking him.
