Mustard oil…just the name is enough. Its zing in pickles, its taste in vegetables and its warmth in massage, the kitchen of Indian homes is incomplete without it. It is known for its strong fragrance and health.

But do you know that every yellow bottle oil available in the market is not real mustard oil? Often, to earn more profits, cheap palm oil or other adulterated things are added to it. This adulteration not only spoils the taste of food, but can also be very dangerous for your health.

Now the question is how to find out? Don’t worry, you don’t need to go to any lab for this. There are some easy and surefire methods hidden in your own kitchen, by which you can identify the difference between real and fake oil in minutes.

1. Freezer Test: The easiest and most effective method

This is the simplest way to check the purity of mustard oil.

  • How to do: Take some mustard oil in a bowl and keep it in the freezer for a few hours.
  • What to see: Take out the oil after a few hours.
    • If the oil is genuine: So it will remain the same or just be slightly blurred. It won’t freeze at all.
    • If the oil is fake: Then it will freeze or white spots will start appearing in it.
  • Why does this happen? Because the cheap palm oil or vegetable ghee used for adulteration freezes in cold, whereas pure mustard oil does not freeze.

2. Test by rubbing on palm: Identification by fragrance and color.

This is a tried and tested method of our grandmothers, which still works today.

  • How to do: Take a few drops of mustard oil on your palm and rub both hands vigorously.
  • What to feel:
    • If the oil is genuine: So there will be a strong, pungent and nose-tingling smell coming from it, which may even cause a slight burning sensation in the eyes. This oil will not leave any color on your skin.
    • If the oil is fake: So either there will be no smell from it or there will be a strange chemical like smell. The biggest thing to notice is that adulterated oil can leave a yellow color on your palm.

3. Chemical test: When there is suspicion of major danger

Attention This test is a little chemical, so do it very carefully and away from children.

  • How to do: Take one spoon of mustard oil in a clean glass bottle or test tube. Now add equal quantity of Nitric Acid in it and stir gently.
  • What to see:
    • If the oil is genuine: So there will be no change in its color.
    • If the oil is fake: So due to adulteration its color can range from orange-yellow to red.

This test is a very reliable method of detecting dangerous adulteration.

Now whenever you buy mustard oil from the market, check its purity with these easy methods before cooking. After all, nothing is more important than health!
