In the Rajya Sabha, Congress Chief Whip Jairam Ramesh on Monday gave notice of breach of privilege against Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. He alleged that Rijiju, Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka D.K. Misodized the House over Shivkumar’s alleged statements.
Ramesh has given this notice under Rules 188 for the functioning of Rajya Sabha and has demanded action on this from Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar.
What is said in the notice?
Jairam Ramesh said in his notice that as soon as the proceedings of Rajya Sabha started on March 24, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju in the House. Citing the alleged statements of Shivkumar, gave false information.
The notice states that:
“DK Shivkumar has described these statements as wrong and derogatory and denied them. Therefore, the comment made by Rijiju is misleading, violation of privilege and contempt of the House.”
Ramesh further said that:
“Making wrong and misleading statements in Parliament is considered a violation of privilege and contempt of the House. Therefore, I request that privilege proceedings be initiated against Rijiju in this matter.”
What did Kiren Rijiju say?
The dispute began when Kiren Rijiju claimed in the House that a senior Congress leader (who is in a constitutional post) has changed the constitution and spoke of reservation to Muslims.
Rijiju did not directly name Shivkumar, but his gesture was towards him. They said,
“We cannot take such a statement lightly. This is not the statement of an ordinary person, but the statement of the person sitting in a constitutional post.”
What will be the next action?
Now the question is whether the Chairman will accept this notice and whether the proceedings of breach of privilege against Kiren Rijiju will start. There is a possibility of increasing dispute between the ruling and the opposition in Parliament on this issue.
