The tradition of lighting lamps in the evening of this day is very old and important. It is believed that donating lamps in the right way on this day eliminates the fear of untimely death and removes all the negative energy from the house.

Why do we light lamps on Narak Chaturdashi?

On this day, there is a tradition of lighting a lamp in the evening for Yamraj, the god of death. It is believed that by doing this, Lord Yamraj is pleased and bestows the boon of long life on the family members and also frees them from the tortures of hell.

Light at least 5 lamps

Although there is a tradition of lighting 14 lamps on Narak Chaturdashi, but if this is not possible, then at least 5 lamps should be lit. Every lamp has its own special meaning and is kept at a particular place.

1. Yama’s lamp (outside the house): This is the most important lamp. Take an old big lamp, add mustard oil and four wicks (four-sided) to it and light it. Place it at the main entrance of the house, facing south. This lamp is for Yamraj.
2. Diya in kitchen: Mother Annapurna resides in the kitchen of the house. By lighting a lamp in the kitchen, the food store in the house is always full.
3. Diya near Tulsi: Tulsi is considered to be the form of Mother Lakshmi. Light a lamp near the Tulsi plant. This brings wealth and prosperity to the house.
4. Under the peepal tree: Light a lamp under a Peepal tree near your house or in a temple. This is for our ancestors and is believed to bring them peace and blessings.
5. At the corner of the house or near the drain: Light a lamp in a dark corner of the house or near the bathroom drain. It is believed that this lamp removes the evil powers and negativity present in the house.

Auspicious time for donating lamps (Choti Diwali 2025 Muhurat)

This year, the date of Narak Chaturdashi will start from 1:51 pm on Sunday, October 19, 2025 and will continue till 3:44 pm on Monday, October 20, 2025. Because the significance of puja and lamp donation is in the evening, hence evening of 19 October It would be best to light the lamps on the same day. Lighting these lamps in the evening during Pradosh period is considered most auspicious.
