One of these sacred Jyotirlingas is Sri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga of Ujjain, who has the distinction of being the only Dakshinamukhi Jyotirlinga of Mrityulok on earth. This unique feature of this makes it different and extremely mysterious from other Jyotirlingas, and there are many amazing stories and secret secrets.

The Mahakal Temple is situated on the banks of the Kshipra River in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. It is stated in the Puranas that the south direction is considered to be the direction of death, and when Shiva resides in a Dakshinamukhi form, it means that they protect their devotees from premature death and fear. Dakshinamukhi idols and temples have special significance in tantric practices. With the mere sight of Mahakaleshwar, the devotee gets freedom from death and paves the way for salvation.

There is a legend associated with this holy Dham. Once upon a time, Ujjain was the kingdom of King Chandrasen who was an exclusive devotee of Lord Shiva. He received a Chintamani Ratna from Lord Shiva. There was a terrible demon named Dushan on the nearby mountain, who used to torture the subjects a lot. The corruption was a boon that no weapon could harm him. Placed by his atrocities, Ujjain’s subjects prayed to Lord Shiva. He also had a child Gopal, who pleaded with Lord Shiva to save his kingdom in the temple. Hearing the call of the devotees, Lord Shiva himself appeared on the earth as Mahakal, killing the corruption in a moment and freed all the Ujjain. Devotees pleaded with Mahadev to stay there so that they could always protect them. On the prayer of the devotees, Lord Shiva has been established as Jyotirlinga in Ujjain, and since then he is worshiped in the name of Mahakaleshwar, who is also the patron of Ujjain.

The Mahakaleshwar temple is built in three blocks. At the bottom Lord Mahakaleshwar, Omkareshwar over him and Nagachandreshwar sit at the top. Nagachandreshwar darshan takes place only once a year on the day of Nagpanchami. The Bhasma Aarti of Mahakaleshwar is world famous, where the adornment of God is done with the ashes of the living pyre, which is only here in the world. It is believed that by visiting Mahakaleshwar in the holy month of Sawan, all the sins of man are destroyed and he gets salvation after being freed from the bondage of life and death. This holy Dham provides supernatural peace and energy to every devotee.
