News India Live, Digital Desk: It is said that “Politics is a game of possibilities.” Here yesterday’s arch enemy can become a best friend today. Is there a strong murmur in the political corridors of Jharkhand these days? Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) And Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) Can you shake hands?

This sounds a bit strange, because both the parties are like North and South Poles at the ideological level. On one side is Hemant Soren’s JMM which talks about ‘tribal identity’, and on the other side is BJP which has a different agenda of nationalism. But if Nitish Kumar can take a U-turn anytime in Bihar, then why can’t it happen in Jharkhand?

Let us understand in simple language that if this ‘unique alliance’ happens, then what both the parties will gain and what they may have to lose.

What will be the ‘benefit’ if there is an alliance? (Pros)

  1. Stability of power: JMM will get the biggest benefit. There is BJP government at the centre. If double engines are installed in the state also, there will be no shortage of funds for development works. The fear of government falling again and again will end.
  2. Relief from investigating agencies? Everyone discusses this in hushed tones. Hemant Soren is under immense pressure from ED and investigating agencies. Going with BJP can reduce this political pressure, as we have seen in other states.
  3. BJP’s entry in tribal votes: The biggest challenge for BJP has been the tribal vote bank. If she comes with JMM, she will have direct access to the tribal areas where she was struggling till now.

What will be the ‘loss’ if there is an alliance? (Cons)

  1. The trust of core voters will be broken: This is the biggest danger. JMM voters consider BJP as anti-tribal and BJP voters associate JMM with corruption. If these two get together, workers and voters on the ground will feel “cheated”. They will feel that principles have been sold just for the chair.
  2. Shock to INDIA alliance: Hemant Soren has been the big face of opposition unity till now. If he goes with BJP, his “rebel and fighter” image at the national level will be ruined.
  3. Future Threat: History is witness to the fact that the smaller party (regional party) with which BJP allies, gradually eats it up in that state (like it happened with Shiv Sena in Maharashtra). For JMM, this friendship would be like “riding a lion”, where it would be difficult to get off.
