According to the Hindu calendar, the sixth date of the Shukla Paksha of every month, i.e. on Shashthi Tithi, fast and worship of Skanda Shashthi is performed. In the year 2025, this festival will be celebrated every month.
Why is Skanda Shashthi so special?
According to mythology, Shashthi Tithi is the day when Lord Kartikeya killed the demon named Tarakasura and freed the gods from his terror. Due to his indomitable courage and valor, he was made the commander of the gods. Lord Kartikeya is known by many names like Skanda Kumar, Murugan, Subrahmanya.
It is also believed that by observing fast and worshiping on this day, Chyavan Rishi got his eyesight back and Priyavrata’s dead son also came alive. That is why the importance of this fast increases even more.
How to worship Lord Kartikeya on this day?
Worship of Skanda Shashthi is very simple. You can easily do this at home:
- Morning preparation: On this day, get up early in the morning and clean the house and after taking a bath, wear clean clothes.
- Resolve to worship: Now install the idol or picture of Lord Kartikeya at the place of worship. If you do not have a picture of him, then you can also keep his picture with Shiva-Parvati. After this, take water in your hand and take a pledge to fast.
- Worship material: Offer Akshat (rice), turmeric, sandalwood, flowers, fruits (especially seasonal fruits), and sweets made of milk.
- Mantra Chanting: While worshiping, chant Lord Kartikeya’s mantra “Om Tatpurushaya Vidmahe Mahasenay Dheemahi Tanno Skand: Prachodayat”. This mantra is considered very powerful.
- Aarti and Prayer: Finally, by lighting a lamp of ghee, perform the aarti of Lord Kartikeya and pray to him to fulfill his wish.
Those who observe fast on this day, they live on fruit throughout the day and open their fast after worship in the evening. This day is considered very important for courage, confidence and energy in life.
