Mexico : A large and historical decision has been taken in Mexico. Mexico will hold judicial elections on Sunday (June 1). This is the first time; The general public will elect judges, magistrates and Supreme Court judges. It is being said that this step has been taken towards making the courts more democratic.
This is being criticized by many experts. It is being said that the courts can be sensitive to political and criminal pressure. According to a survey by Pew Research Center, 66% of Mexicans support these new historical judicial reforms. This includes especially young people and Morona supporters. But opposition parties and some civil groups have described it as a joke of democracy. This decision is also being strongly opposed.

Supreme Court judges in Mexico are selected by the President and then confirmed by the Senate. Other judges were selected on the basis of their qualifications.
But according to the new policy, now the general public will vote and choose the judges. Elections are being held for more than 1,800 local judicial posts as well as about 900 federal positions in 19 states of Mexico. Voting will be held in two phases. The first phase will be in 2025 and the second phase in 2027.
Political moves or improvement?
Former President Endress Manual Lopez Obredor approved this reform in the Constitution at the end of his tenure. Endres claimed that this would increase accountability in courts and ensure public participation in the judicial process. But the opposition expressed displeasure over his decision.
According to the opposition, Andress’s party is trying to strengthen the power of Morona. The court has also repeatedly rejected proposals to give the general public the right to choose judges. If the judges were selected by the popular vote, they would have been subject to political influence. This will make the courts sensitive to political and criminal elements.
