News India Live, Digital Desk: In Bihar’s Budget 2026-27, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has given the gift of ‘free electricity’ as well as ‘free power generation’ to the poor. The Energy Department has distributed electricity on the rooftops of about 58 lakh poor consumers (under Kutir Jyoti category) of the state. 1.1 kilowatt It has been decided to set up a capacity solar power plant. The government aims that through this initiative even the poorest of the poor families can get 24 hours uninterrupted and free electricity.
5 important things about solar plant scheme
Completely Free (100% Subsidy): Beneficiaries will not have to spend a single penny under this scheme. The entire cost of the plant (approximately ₹60,000 per unit) will be borne jointly by the Central and State governments.
Who will get the benefit?: This scheme is mainly for ‘Kutir Jyoti’ category consumers and families living below poverty line (BPL). in the first phase 10 lakhs Solar panels will be installed on the homes of the families.
Capacity of 1.1 KW: Each house will be given a rooftop solar system of 1.1 kilowatt. This will generate enough electricity for the basic needs of a small family (like bulb, fan, and TV).
With 125 units of free electricity: 125 units of free electricity has already been announced in the budget. After installation of solar panels, consumers’ dependence on the grid will reduce and they will also be able to sell excess electricity back to the grid.
Environment friendly: This scheme will drastically reduce the carbon footprint of Bihar. A target has been set to install 500 MW solar plants on government buildings also in the next 5 years.
How will this plan work?
Government PM Suryaghar Free Electricity Scheme Is adopting the model. In this, central subsidy of ₹ 33,000 will be given and the remaining amount will be given from state government funds.

Eligibility: It is mandatory to be a permanent resident of Bihar. The electricity connection of the consumer should be of ‘Kutir Jyoti’ or BPL category.
