On December 18, 1961, the Indian Army took a historic step and liberated Goa, Daman and Diu from the Portuguese rule. This military operation was named ‘Operation Vijay’. Despite diplomatic efforts between India and Portugal for 14 years after independence, control of these areas remained with Portugal.
The objective of Operation Vijay was to end Portuguese rule through armed conflict in a limited period and to annex these territories into India. Indian Army, Navy and Air Force jointly participated in it. Due to the speed of the campaign and precise strategy, the Portuguese soldiers soon surrendered. As a result, these areas, which had been colonized by the Portuguese for about 450 years, came to the brink of independence.
This victory not only ensured the territorial integrity of India but also strengthened the sovereignty and pride of the country. After Operation Vijay, Goa, Daman and Diu were incorporated as full states and union territories under the Indian Constitution. This day became a symbol of national unity and courage in Indian history. Even today, 19 December is celebrated as ‘Goa Liberation Day’, an occasion to remember the sacrifices and military prowess of Operation Vijay.
