The people of Karnataka have suffered another setback of inflation. From April 1, milk prices in the state will be increased by Rs 4 per liter. This announcement is the state cooperative minister K.K. N. Rajanna did it on Thursday. He said that this decision has been taken due to pressure from milk associations and farmers.
Why the price of milk increased?
Minister Rajanna clarified that the increase in milk prices has been decided by the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF). He said:
“Milk associations had demanded an increase in Rs 5 per liter. The government, considering this, approved an increase of Rs 4. This entire amount will go to the farmers.”
According to the minister, this increase has been done to strengthen the economic condition of farmers, so that they can face high production costs.
Milk prices low in Karnataka compared to other states
KMF president Bhima Naik said that Karnataka had low milk prices than other states. He said:
“KMF buys 86 lakh to 1 crore liters of milk daily. At present, 1 liter of milk is sold in Karnataka for Rs 42, while in other states it costs more:”
| State | Milk price (per liter) |
|---|---|
| Gujarat | 53 rupees |
| Andhra Pradesh and Telangana | 58 rupees |
| Delhi and Maharashtra | 56 rupees |
| Kerala | 54 rupees |
He insisted that farmers should get the right price according to their cost, so this increase was necessary.
Milk also expensive after increasing bus, metro and electricity rates
Milk prices have increased at a time when electricity rates are increasing along with bus and metro fare. Due to this, the general public may have to bear additional financial burden.
Last year also increased prices
-
KMF last year increased the price of milk by Rs 2 per packet.
-
However, at that time the amount of milk per packet was increased by 50 ml, which did not make much impact to the consumers.
-
But this time there has been no change in quantity despite the rise in prices.
Effect on the price of Nandini brand milk
KMF sells dairy products under its ‘Nandini’ brand.
Current Prices:
-
The price of 1,050 ml Nandini toned milk (blue packet) is Rs 44.
-
After April 1, this price will increase to Rs 48.
