Imagine for a minute to disappear from your mobile. Neither whatsapp, nor google maps, nor Instagram … how would it feel? Perhaps life will stop for most of us.
But do you know that there is a country in the world even today, where it is almost impossible for common people to run internet on mobile. It is not an Africa’s backward tribal area, but a country located in Central Asia – (Turkmenistan),
Isn’t there really an internet?
This story is slightly different. It is not that there is no internet cable, but the government has kept such a strong control over the Internet that it does not have access to the common man.
- Not internet, ‘turkmenet’: What people get in Turkmenistan are called ‘Turkmenets’. This is a very small and closed network controlled by the government, which you can call ‘local internet’.
- Google, youtube, facebook all ban: On this ‘Turkmenet’ you will not find any global website or app like Google, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram or WhatsApp. Here only the websites that have been approved by the government, which are mostly of government propaganda.
- Mobile just talks: People have mobile phones, but they are able to use it mainly only to call or send SMS. The concept of mobile data is not for the general public.
Why is such a ban?
The government of Turkmenistan keeps a very tough guard on its country’s information. She does not want his citizens to come in contact with the outside world or go out any news of the country. This is why there is such a tough sensorship on the Internet and media.
Apart from this country, there are similar situations in North Korea. Knowing that we really realize how lucky we are that we have the freedom to connect with information and the whole world.
