Modi's SMS and Nano plant shifted from Bengal to Gujarat in 4 days

Narendra Modi, the then Chief Minister of Gujarat, sent a one-word SMS to Ratan Tata, which led to the transfer of the Tata Nano project from West Bengal to Gujarat in 2008, and the SMS was 'Welcome'.

Narendra Modi sent this SMS to Tata when industrialist Ratan Tata was addressing a press conference in Kolkata. It announced the withdrawal of the Tata Nano project from West Bengal following violent protests led by Trinamool Congress president Mamata Banerjee.

Ratan Tata announced the move of the Nano project out of West Bengal on 3 October 2008 and said that a plant would be set up in Sanand, Gujarat in the next 4 days.

At that time, Narendra Modi had said that many countries are ready to provide all possible help for the nano project, but Gujarat government officials ensured that this project does not go out of India. He also lauded the government machinery and said, it matches the corporate culture in efficiency and is playing a major role in the rapid development of the state.

During the rollout of the first Nano car from the Sanand plant in June 2010, Ratan Tata praised the Modi-led Gujarat government. Ratan Tata said, when we invented the second nano plant, we wanted to move towards peace and harmony. Gujarat gave us everything we wanted. We are very grateful for the support and confidence shown in us. However, Tata discontinued the Nano car in 2018.
