According to a report by the Times of India, the Rajasthan government is planning to change the name of its only hill station Mount Abu. Due to this, a total of 23 organizations from Mount Abu gathered in protest on Monday. He strongly opposed the proposal to rename Mount Abu to ‘Abu Raj Tirtha’. This was first discussed during the municipality meeting in October 2024.
According to reports, the dispute started when the local body department wrote a letter to Mount Abu Municipal Body on 25 April seeking suggestions on the name change proposed. The official documents received by the newspaper have revealed that the department denied the communication before the Chief Minister’s Office, which shows that the discussion on changing the name had started in October 2024 itself. The letter specifically mentioned the UO Note of the Deputy Director (Statistics) of April 15, seeking factual comments on the proposal. Organizations opposing the name change argued that this proposal did not get public support and by doing so, Mount Abu’s identity would change from a tourist destination to a religious pilgrimage site.
The protesters claim that a local MLA, who is supported by a minister, is insisting on banning meat and alcohol in Mount Abu citing the ancient religious significance of the region. People are worried that such restrictions may reduce the attraction of hill stations for tourists. One of them said that an MLA in the state assembly wants to change the name without the consent of the people. The Chief Minister is scheduled to come to Abu in the second or third week of May and after that a decision can be taken in this regard.
Saurabh Gangadia, secretary of Mount Abu Hotel Association, said in this context that tourism will end if the government changes the name of the hill station. This will create unemployment on a large scale. Who will come to the hill station after a ban on alcohol and meat?
Vikas Seth, president of Nakki Lake Association, described Mount Abu as a pilgrimage site as misleading and said that it would discourage tourists from coming to this place. Seth said that the proposal to convert Mount Abu into Abu Raj temple gives a misleading message.
