News India Live, Digital Desk: A very heartbreaking news has come out from Khunti district of Jharkhand. A District Force jawan was killed by an accidental bullet fired while cleaning his own service rifle (INSAS). This incident took place on the afternoon of Tuesday, March 24, 2026, in the police line barrack. The bullet went straight through the soldier’s chest, leaving him no chance to recover. This tragic accident has once again raised serious questions on the safety drills of the police department and the precautions taken during the maintenance of weapons.

1. Preparing to go on duty and that moment of time

Identification of deceased soldier Constable Sumit Oraon Who were originally from Lohardaga district.

Events: Sumit was getting ready to go for his afternoon shift duty. While cleaning his rifle in the barracks, suddenly the trigger got pressed.

There was a bullet in the chamber: It is believed that a round bullet was stuck in the chamber of the rifle, which was cleaned without being unloaded. Hearing the sound of firing, other soldiers living with him came running, but by then Sumit had fallen down drenched in blood.

2. Died before reaching the hospital

Fellow soldiers hurriedly took Sumit to Sadar Hospital, Khunti, where doctors treated him. ‘Brought Dead’ Declared.

Visiting Officials: Khunti SP Aman Kumar And other senior officers immediately reached the hospital and the spot (barrack). The SP has termed the incident as an ‘unfortunate human error’.

Forensic Investigation: That part of the police line has been sealed and the forensic (FSL) team has been called to clarify from which angle the bullet was fired and whether there was any technical fault (misfire) in the weapon.

3. Crying and bad condition of family members

The family members of martyred soldier Sumit Oraon have been informed. There is mourning in his native village of Lohardaga. Sumit’s colleagues say that he was a friendly and disciplined soldier. The department has announced that Sumit’s last rites will be performed with full state honors and his family will be provided ex-gratia as per rules.

4. Questions arising on security protocols

In the past too, incidents of ‘accidental fire’ have been reported in Jharkhand Police while cleaning or loading-unloading weapons.

Lack of training? Experts are raising questions whether soldiers are being given refresher training on safe handling of weapons from time to time.

Rule: As per protocol, before cleaning any weapon, it is mandatory to ‘clear’ the chamber at least three times by removing the magazine, non-compliance of which can prove fatal.
