National Flag Code and key points of its importance

New Delhi: India will celebrate its 76th Republic Day on 26 January 2025. The day marks the historic moment when the Constitution of India came into force on 26 January 1950, establishing the country as a republic and replacing the Government of India Act of 1935. The Constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949.

The national flag is hoisted in schools, offices and public places across the country during Republic Day celebrations. Every color and symbol of the tricolor has a special meaning:

• Saffron Colour: A symbol of courage, sacrifice and dedication.
• White color: A symbol of hope for truth, peace and unity.
• Green colour: Symbol of prosperity, fertility and sustainable development.
• Ashoka Chakra: The 24 pointed circle represents the eternal cycle of life and action.

Guidelines for hoisting the national flag
The Flag Code of India, 2002 (as amended in 2021), allows citizens to fly the flag at their homes, offices and other places. It also allows the use of machine-made and polyester flags.

Rules to be followed while hoisting the flag (What to do):

1. The flag should always be hoisted quickly and lowered slowly.
2. The flag should not be allowed to fall on the ground or in water.
3. While hoisting the flag, the saffron strip should be on top.
4. It is mandatory to hoist the flag from sunrise to sunset. There should be proper lighting arrangements when hoisting at night.
5. When not in use, the flag should be folded into a triangle shape and stored respectfully.

Precautions related to respect for the flag (what not to do):

1. The flag should never be allowed to touch the ground, water or any other surface.
2. Flags should not be used as clothing, decorations, tablecloths or disposable items.
3. The flag should not be stored in a distorted, folded or disorganized form.
4. Symbols, flowers, or other objects may not be placed on the flag.
5. The flag should not be flown at half mast without government instructions.

Importance of Republic Day
The day is a celebration of the country’s rich cultural and democratic heritage. The rules of hoisting the national flag and maintaining its respect are the responsibility of every Indian citizen. It is not just a symbol, but a symbol of unity, freedom and pride of the country.
