NHRC’s Tough Stand: West Bengal DGP asked to respond to Panoli’s safety

News India Live, Digital Desk: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to West Bengal Police Director General Rajiv Kumar to ensure social media affected and the security of the law student Sharmistha Panoli, which was allegedly arrested for sharing communal comments related to Operation Sindoor, according to Priyank Kanungo, a member of NHRC.

Kanungo said that this action was mainly taken in response to the “threats of rape and death” to Panoli in recent times. The Human Rights Commission also received a complaint in which the procedural flaws were accused by the West Bengal Police in Haryana in the arrest of Panoli.

Panoli was arrested on 30 May by the West Bengal Police from Gurugram in Haryana for a disputed social media post. He has since been kept in judicial custody till 13 June.

ANI quoted Kanungo as saying, “We have received a complaint from an organization called Legal Rights Observatory that West Bengal Police arrested a law student from Haryana at midnight due to an alleged objectionable post on social media. The complaint alleged that in the complaint that her arrest and transit did not follow the appropriate legal procedures during her arrest and transit. It is also said that the girl was said to have been raped and death. Are.”

Kanungo further stated that NHRC has approached the Haryana government to verify whether the appropriate process was followed during the arrest of Panoli.

Kanungo said, “We have issued notice to the Chief Secretary and DGP of West Bengal to ensure their safety, especially when he is now in judicial custody. In addition, we have sought clarification from the Haryana government whether all legal protocols were followed. Based on the answers, we will decide further action.”

Complaint filed against complainant

A complaint has been lodged against a 30 -year -old Kolkata resident, who lodged an FIR against Panoli on 14 May. 22 -year -old Panoli was arrested on 30 May.
