News India Live, Digital Desk: It is often said in politics that if you want to become a horse of a long race, then you have to learn to walk on the party line (party rules). But Shashi Tharoor is one of those leaders who believes in creating his own path instead of following the path. This habit of his has become a headache for the Congress party in Kerala.
Shashi Tharoor, MP from Thiruvananthapuram and famous for his excellent English, is again in the headlines these days due to his statements. The issue is not what he said, the issue is that his statements are making the local leaders of Kerala Congress feel uncomfortable.
Has bluntness become a problem?
Tharoor sahib’s specialty is that he speaks whatever he feels. Many times his attitude is soft or full of praise towards the leaders of the opposition party (be it CM Pinarayi Vijayan or the leaders of the Centre). This may be a good thing in an educated and civilized society, but politics runs on profit and loss.
When Tharoor praises any work of opposition leaders or has a different opinion from his own party’s stand, the morale of the Congress cadre starts breaking. The Congress leaders of Kerala say that if our own big leaders praise the Leftist Government (LDF) or the Central Government against which they are fighting day and night, then what will we say to the public?
Local leaders vs Tharoor
Congress in Kerala has V.D. Satheesan and K. There are strong leaders like Sudhakaran who are running the organization. But, Tharoor’s popularity is at a different level. Young people like him. In such a situation, when Tharoor makes statements going beyond the party line, local leaders feel that they are being ignored or discipline is being broken. There is a lot of internal conflict regarding this.
‘Team player’ or ‘Solo player’?
The problem is that even the Congress high command (Delhi leadership) is facing a dilemma. On one side there is a ‘global face’ like Tharoor who attracts the educated vote bank, and on the other side there is an organization which fights on the ground from booth to booth. Tharoor’s latest statements have again reignited the debate whether he likes to play with the team or is ‘solo batting’ his style?
question of future
If the situation continues like this, the party may suffer losses in the coming elections. The opposition parties (especially Left and BJP) are taking advantage of this ‘infighting’ of Congress with great pleasure. The public is watching everything. If Congress wants to keep its hold strong in Kerala, then it will have to achieve ‘ceasefire’ i.e. reconciliation between Tharoor and the organization.
Otherwise, the words of Tharoor, who has a poetic style, sound good but can ‘silence’ the party in the calculation of votes.
