There is a unique place on the world map where the same country is divided into two completely different worlds – North Korea and Southern Korea. About 70 years ago, after a bloody war of 1950–53, the Korean peninsula was divided into two parts by a demilitered zone (DMZ). Since then, these two countries have selected such opposite ways of development that they are not only geographically one, but in every case are completely opposite to each other.
1. Governance and Economy:
-
North Korea: There is a dictatorial government here, which is in the hands of Kim Il Sung’s family (Kim Jong Un). The country is completely cut off from the outside world and is very poor due to international sanctions. There are often reports of starvation. The government controls everything.
-
Southern Korea: It is an independent, lively democracy. The President is elected here and the country has become one of the most developed and rich economies in the world, making it fast.
2. Freedom and expression:
-
North Korea: The freedom of citizens is negligible. The government imposes strict censorship on everything – what will you wear, what will you see, even which haircut will adopt, it is also decided. People cannot travel anywhere at their own will, neither inside and outside the country.
-
Southern Korea: There is freedom of complete expression here. People can see, wear and say what they want. The fastest internet in the world is found here, and people here travel freely.
3. access to internet and information:
-
North Korea: The external internet is completely banned. Citizens only have access to the government-controlled ‘Intranet’, which only contain only a few government websites and propaganda materials. It is a serious crime to see or keep foreign media.
-
Southern Korea: The Internet is open and wider. It is digitally one of the most connected countries in the world, where all kinds of information and entertainment are available. The K-POP and Korean drama are dominated worldwide from here.
4. Media and Propaganda:
-
North Korea: Government media is the only source of information. The government’s agenda is the news. Since childhood, citizens are taught the greatness of the leader and mistrust towards the outside world.
-
Southern Korea: Here is independent and diverse media, which also criticizes the government. All types of international news and entertainment are easily available here.
5. Living and lifestyle:
-
North Korea: People’s lives are full of struggles. Electricity, food and other basic needs are also not easily available. There are no major shopping malls or modern supermarkets here.
-
Southern Korea: People’s standard of living is very high. Cities are full of high-rise buildings, modern technology, large shopping malls and restaurants. Life is very comfortable and convenient.
Both countries are still technically in a state of war, only the ceasefire is applicable. While North Korea often performs its military strengths and nuclear programs, Southern Korea is leading the world in the fields of science, technology and entertainment. This difference is not just about geography, but the difference of thinking, freedom and progress.
