New Delhi: Driving license (DL) is a very important legal document to drive a vehicle in India. Ensuring its regular renewal not only protects you from fine, but also ensures that you are safe and legally driving on the road. If your driving license is going to expire or is done, you can easily renew it through online or offline process.

Why get a driving license renewed?

legal requirement: According to the Indian Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, driving without a valid driving license is illegal.

Prevention of fine: Driving with an expired DL may be fined heavy.

Insurance claim: In the event of an accident, the insurance company may refuse to give the claim if not valid DL is not valid.

proof of identification: DL is also accepted as an important identity card.

Driving license validity and renewal time:

The validity of DL issued for private vehicles is usually up to the age of 20 years or 40 years of license holder (whichever is earlier). Subsequently, it has to be renewed, whose validity is usually up to 10 years. (These age and rules may vary slightly according to the state). You can apply for renewal a year before the license’s expiry date or within 30 days of expiry. Late fee may apply after 30 days of grace period.

Renewation process:

1. Online process (through Parivahan portal):
This is the most convenient method.

fee payment: Pay the required fee (usually ₹ 200-₹ 300, can vary according to the state) from online mode (debit card, credit card, UPI).

Book appointments: In some states, it may be necessary to book a slot to go to RTO for biometrics (photo, thumb impression).

Confirmation: After submitting the application, get an application reference number and take a print. Renewed DL is usually sent by post to your registered address in a few days.
