Why have prices been stable for a long time?

No major change has been seen in the prices of petrol and diesel in the country since May 2022. The main reason for this is the reduction in excise duty by the Central Government and reduction of its tax (VAT) by many states. Even though the prices of crude oil have been going up and down in the international market, its direct burden is not being passed on to the general public at present.

How is the price of oil decided? 5 big reasons

  1. Crude Oil Price: India buys most of its crude oil needs from outside. If its prices increase in the international market, oil becomes expensive in the country also.
  2. Rupee-Dollar Game: Crude oil is purchased in dollars. If the rupee weakens against the dollar, we have to pay more to buy oil.
  3. Government taxes: Central excise duty and state VAT form a major part of the oil price. This is the reason why rates differ in different states.
  4. Refining and transportation costs: There is a lot of cost in refining crude oil and making petrol and diesel and then transporting it to every corner of the country.
  5. Demand and Supply: Even if the demand for oil increases in the country, it affects the prices.
