News India Live, Digital Desk: Polio Vaccine: After recently discovered the polio virus at Papua New Guinea, UNICEF is increasing its support to the National Government to ensure that every child can be secured through timely vaccination. This happened when the World Health Organization (WHO) Has announced the polio outbreak in the country, enjoying the polio -free situation for 25 years. The nationwide emergency response has become active due to this health warning, in which UNICEF Papua is working closely with the New Guinea Sarkar, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Australian Government. Their joint mission is to prevent the spread of polio and protect children’s health across the country.
Dr. Veera Mendonka, a representative of UNICEF at Papua New Guinea, emphasized that although there is no cure for polio, the disease can be completely prevented through vaccination. UNICEF is fully committed to help the government in preventing this outbreak. We are working to improve the monitoring of the disease, distribute vaccines and support two rounds of national vaccination campaigns, ”he said.
He also highlighted the important role of local communities and religious leaders in gathering public support. He said, “Church and community leaders play an important role in spreading accurate health information and encouraging vaccination. Their participation is necessary to reach every child.”
UNICEF is also supporting provincial health teams by providing technical assistance in cold chain management, communication and behavior changes. Experts have been deployed in various fields including Morobe and National Capital District to strengthen the response. Dr. Mendonka urged media outlets, community groups and local influential people to combat misinformation and promote vaccination awareness.
He said, “It is important to compete with the facts of rumors for the success of this campaign.”
Although Papua New GiNi had been enjoying the polio-free situation for 25 years, but insufficient vaccination programs are responsible for the current outbreak. Dr. Mendonka has emphasized the need to avoid maximum advantage of this opportunity to prevent outbreaks and improve long -term vaccination coverage. UNICEF, along with the National Health Department and its international partners, is calling on children, parents and carers to ensure that children are vaccinated for polio.
