PM modi, india-uk fta: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Britain and Maldives, the signature on the big trade agreement will be signed, according to the Ministry of External Affairs, PM Modi is on a visit to Britain for the fourth time on the invitation of British Prime Minister Keer starrer. During this time, the two leaders will discuss regional and global issues besides India-Britain bilateral relations.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Britain and Maldives this week. The main objective of this journey is to further strengthen bilateral relations with both countries. Especially, preparations are underway to finalize the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and Britain, which can double $ 60 billion bilateral trade between the two countries by 2030. Apart from this, Prime Minister Modi will join the Maldives’ Independence Day program as the chief guest and give new pace to India-Maldives relations.

India-Britain Free Trade Agreement

This free trade agreement between India and Britain was scheduled in May 2025. The agreement will be officially approved on July 23-24 during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Britain. This agreement will promote India’s export of textile, leather and engineering goods. On the other hand, taxes coming from Britain, cars and medical equipment will be reduced.

One important thing about this agreement is that Indian workers will not have to provide social security contribution for three years while working in Britain, which will provide great relief to employers. In addition, India will get tax exemption facility on its 99% tariff lines, which will cover almost the entire trade. Britain will also get relief from tax on 90% tariff lines.

What will be the benefit of this?

This agreement will provide great benefits to countries like India’s textile, leather, shoes, jewelery, medicine, agriculture and processed foods on countries like Bangladesh and Vietnam. Under this agreement, bilateral trade can reach $ 120 billion by 2030, which is currently doubled from $ 60 billion.

Travel to Maldives: A new dimension in relationships

Prime Minister Modi will visit Maldives on 25-26 July, where he will attend the 60th Independence Day celebrations of Maldives as the chief guest. During this time he will meet Maldives President Mohammad Muizu and discuss issues of mutual interest.

The visit is particularly important because the recent policies of Maldives President Moi have cooled down in India-Maldives relations. The journey is expected to bring new pace in relations between the two countries. The two leaders will also discuss the extending ‘comprehensive economic and maritime security partnership’ agreed during Moi’s visit to India in October 2024.

What will be the effect of this?

Both these trips will further strengthen India’s global political and economic status. Free trade agreement with Britain will make India’s labor-dominated areas competitive in the global market, while warmth in relations with Maldives will further strengthen India’s South Asian leadership role.
