Why is Chhath Mahaparva one of the most difficult fasts?
It would be wrong to call Chhath Puja just a fast; This is a difficult penance. This is a four-day practice in which the devotee not only gives up food and water, but also keeps strict control over his mind and body.
It begins with ‘Nahay-Khay’, in which the devotee takes bath, consumes satvik food and purifies the house. On the second day, there is ‘Kharna’, in which, after fasting without water for the whole day, prasad of jaggery (rasiyaav) and roti is eaten in the evening. After this Prasad, the most difficult Nirjala (without water) fast of about 36 hours begins, which ends only after offering Arghya to the rising Sun.
This fast is the biggest test of physical endurance and unwavering faith, which is why it is called Mahaparva.
