This announcement is a great relief for those who frequently travel to South-East Asia or Gulf countries for education, job or business, and who currently have to depend on cities like Delhi or Mumbai. The first direct international flights from Patna’s Jaiprakash Narayan International Airport are likely to start soon.

This is not just an announcement, but negotiations with airline companies are in the final stages. The routes which are being focused on in the primary phase include Thailand (Bangkok), Singapore and some other South-East Asian and Gulf countries.

Why is international connectivity important with Bihar?

  • Trade and Investment: Business activities will accelerate with the commencement of direct flights. This will prove important in attracting foreign investment and boosting the economy of Bihar.
  • Overseas Bihari Community: Lakhs of Bihari students and workers work in the Middle-East (Gulf countries) and South-East Asia. By getting direct connectivity, both their travel time and expenses will be reduced.
  • Tourism: It will provide direct access to international travelers coming to Bihar for Buddhist and Jain tourism, which will give a big boost to the tourism industry.

What are the plans and challenges?

Airport authorities say they are strengthening all infrastructure, including Customs and Immigration, for international operations. This time limit of three months is a tough challenge for the officials, but there is also excitement.

However, a major challenge is that Patna airport is small and has limited capacity to land large aircraft. But this work can be successfully undertaken by focusing on regional and neighboring international routes.
