Tehran (Iran), January 12: People took to the streets in the country’s capital and second largest cities on Saturday night and Sunday morning during nationwide protests challenging the theocracy of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. According to the American Human Rights Activists News Agency, the death toll from violence related to the protests since December 28 has risen to at least 538.

According to CBS News report, due to internet being shut down in Iran and phone lines being cut, it has become difficult to gauge the true situation from other countries. The death toll in clashes between protesters and Iranian security forces is continuously increasing. The Human Rights Activists News Agency reported that 490 of those killed were protesters and 48 were members of security forces. So far 10,600 other people have been detained. The Iranian government has not given any overall number of casualties.
