News India Live, Digital Desk: The direct impact of the ongoing tension in the Middle East is now visible on India’s kitchens and restaurants. There has been a sudden huge jump in the prices of natural gas coming to India from Qatar and it has become twice as expensive. In such a situation, the Indian government is now considering importing gas from countries like America and Norway instead of Qatar. On the other hand, due to shortage of LPG in many big cities of the country, hotels and restaurants have become locked. Let us know what this whole crisis is and what effect it is going to have on the common man.
Qatar’s mathematics deteriorated, America and Norway become new options According to official sources, till now India was buying gas from Qatar at the rate of 6 to 8 dollars per MMBTU (Metric Million British Thermal Unit). But in the current situation this price has jumped to $ 15 per MMBTU. Energy sector experts say that whenever the price of gas crosses $10, it is more economically beneficial for India to source gas from America and Norway despite the long distance. However, due to the long distance, it may take about two months for the gas consignment to reach India via ships.
Threat of closure looms over hotel and restaurant industry The sudden shortage of commercial LPG cylinders has given hoteliers sleepless nights. Hotel associations in metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Pune and Bengaluru have warned that if the gas supply does not become normal in the next day or two, they will be forced to close their operations.
There is no need for the general public to panic, the government has made a special plan While on one hand industries are in trouble, on the other hand there is news of relief for common households. The government has made it clear that there will be no interruption in the supply of gas to domestic consumers (Domestic LPG). For this, the government has taken many big steps:
Increase in production: LPG production has been increased by 10 percent with immediate effect.
Homes get first priority: Supply of LPG and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) to households is being given top priority as compared to industries.
Formation of Committee: The Petroleum Ministry has formed a special committee to deal with the shortage of commercial gas. This committee will assess the actual needs of hotels and restaurants in different cities of the country and provide them gas.
How long will this gas crisis last? Government officials have clarified that there is going to be no long-term shortage of gas and fuel in India. The supply of both LNG and LPG is in the pipeline. It may take some time for the supply chain to be set up and deliveries from new countries to arrive, but this crisis is completely temporary. As soon as the gas consignments from America and Norway reach India, the supply will become completely normal.
