With the beginning of the new year 2026, the Central Government is going to make major changes in many important rules related to the kitchen and pocket of the common man. From January 1, 2026, four new and strict rules regarding ration cards and gas cylinders will come into effect, which will have a direct impact on crores of ration card holders of the country and the beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.
The aim of the government through these changes is to bring transparency in the system, weed out fake beneficiaries and ensure that the benefits of government schemes reach only the right and needy people. If you are also taking advantage of free ration or subsidized gas cylinder, then it is very important for you to know these new rules, otherwise your name may be cut from the beneficiary list.
1. Ration will not be available without e-KYC, card will be cancelled.
The first and biggest rule of the government is related to e-KYC of ration card. The government has made it clear that the ration cards of those families who have not completed the Aadhaar verification of all their members by visiting the ration shop, will be canceled from January 1, 2026. Every member of the family will have to verify their identity by putting their thumb impression on the PoS machine installed at the ration shop. This rule is to ensure that ration is given only to living and eligible persons. If a family member lives in another city, he can complete his KYC by visiting any nearest government shop under the ‘One Nation One Ration Card’ scheme.
2. Punishment will fall on ineligible people, recovery will be done
The government has now made the eligibility criteria for ration cards even more stringent. Under the new rules, the cards of all those people who are availing BPL or other poor category ration cards despite being financially prosperous will be cancelled. If a family has a four-wheeler, a government job, more than 5 acres of irrigated land, or any member pays income tax, they will be considered ineligible. The government is identifying such people through digital database. If a person himself does not surrender his card and is caught in the investigation, the entire ration taken so far will be recovered from him at the market rate.
3. Biometric necessary for gas subsidy
Now e-KYC has been made mandatory to get subsidy on gas cylinders. From January 1, 2026, the subsidy will be stopped for all those consumers who have not updated their biometric verification by visiting their gas agency. This rule is extremely important especially for the beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. Apart from this, to prevent black marketing of gas cylinders, OTP-based verification can also be made mandatory at the time of delivery, under which the delivery boy will have to provide the OTP received on your registered mobile.
4. Now new ration card will be made sitting at home
While on one hand the government is tightening the rules, on the other hand it is also simplifying the procedures. From January 1, 2026, the processes like making a new ration card or adding name to it, changing the address have been made completely online. Now common citizens will not have to visit government offices and they will be able to apply from their mobile or computer sitting at home, which will free them from middlemen and the work will be done faster.
Relief may be available in the new year
On the first of every month, oil companies review the prices of gas cylinders. It is expected that the common man will benefit from the fall in crude oil prices in the international market. It is estimated that on January 1, 2026, the prices of domestic and commercial gas cylinders may be reduced by Rs 30 to Rs 50.
