Jabalpur/Bhopal, 13 January: The sale of Almont Kid syrup, which is given to children for allergies, has been banned in Madhya Pradesh. On Tuesday, the state government has issued an advisory in this regard. Actually, this syrup also contains poisonous industrial chemical (bad ethylene glycol), which is mainly used in the coolant of vehicles. The same poisonous chemical was also present in Coldrif cough syrup, after consumption of which more than 25 innocent people lost their lives due to kidney failure in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh.
Giving information on Tuesday, Madhya Pradesh Drug Controller Dinesh Srivastava said that after poisonous chemical was found in Almont Kid syrup, the Telangana government banned it in its state and has sent information about it to other states as well. The notice from Telangana had reached all the states on Saturday. After this, taking it further, we have sent information to the drug inspectors present in every district of the state. Also, the process of seasoning the respective syrup has been started. This process is going on in the entire state.
He said that the Madhya Pradesh government has issued an advisory regarding Almont Kid Syrup and has banned its stock and sale. In Jabalpur also, the Drug Inspector has instructed all the medical shop operators that if this syrup is kept somewhere, then they should deposit it. However, the drug inspector says that till now no information has been received about the stock in the district.
It is noteworthy that a few months ago, the cough syrup scandal in Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh was in the headlines across the country. Here, more than 25 children died due to kidney failure after consuming Coldrif cough syrup. During this time, the state government had got Coldrif cough syrup tested, in which it was confirmed that the chemical diethylene glycol was found. Now the same poisonous chemical has been found in Almont Kid syrup given to children suffering from allergies.
Telangana Drug Control Administration has issued orders to ban Almont-Kid syrup from being given to children with immediate effect. Issuing an urgent advisory in this regard, the department said that a highly poisonous chemical called ethylene glycol has been found in this syrup. This action has been taken on the basis of the lab report received from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization.
The Telangana government report has also confirmed that this medicine of batch number AL-24002, manufactured by Bihar-based company ‘Tridus Remedies’, is adulterated and deadly. This syrup is commonly prescribed by doctors to treat allergies, fever and asthma in children. After the matter came to light, the Food and Drug Administration Department of all the districts of Madhya Pradesh is also on alert mode. Instructions have been given to drug sellers to stop the sale of medicines. However, no stock of the concerned medicine has been found with anyone at present.
Chandresh Jain, former secretary of Jabalpur Chemist and Drug Association, said that batch number AL-24002 of Almont syrup, which has been banned, is currently not available in any medical store in Jabalpur or the surrounding districts. He said that an advisory has been issued that if this syrup is present in any shop, it should be surrendered immediately. Drug Inspector Devendra Jain said that instructions have been received from the state government to check every medical shop in the district to ensure that Almont syrup is not being sold anywhere. Besides, information is also being collected from the dealers that if the syrup of AL-24002 batch is in stock, it should be immediately separated.
