SC ban on UGC rules, Mayawati played a big bet, placed this big demand for upper castes, stir in political circles

News India Live, Digital Desk: After the Supreme Court’s ban on the controversial ‘Equity Regulation 2026’ of UGC (University Grants Commission), a new boil has come in the politics of Uttar Pradesh. Welcoming this decision, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati has given a statement which has forced the opponents to think. Mayawati not only appreciated the intervention of the Supreme Court, but also raised her voice for the interests of the upper castes.

‘The new policy was going to spread caste hatred’ – Mayawati

BSP chief Mayawati took on the central government and UGC through social media platform ‘X’. He said that there were loopholes in the new UGC rules which could destroy brotherhood in the society and promote caste hatred. According to Mayawati, it is dangerous to have such ‘vague’ rules in the temples of education, where students from every section come together to weave the future of the country.

Mayawati’s big demand for the poor section of the upper castes

He said: “Our party believes that the benefit of any rule should not be given to only one party. Just as there should not be injustice to the SC/ST and OBC communities, in the same way there should not be any discrimination against the students from the poor section of the upper caste (EWS) community.”

He demanded that UGC should now make such a transparent policy in which economically weaker students of all sections get equal protection and justice.

Root of controversy: What were the rules on which the Supreme Court banned?

In the new regulation of UGC 2026, new provisions were made for the settlement of complaints of caste-based discrimination. The petitioners claimed that these rules were ‘extreme’ and had no mechanism to prevent false complaints. The Supreme Court also acknowledged that the language of the rules is such that it can tear the society apart. After this tough stance of the court, Mayawati has called it ‘victory of the Constitution’.

New sound of ‘social engineering’ in UP politics?

Political experts believe that this stance of Mayawati could be a part of her old ‘social engineering’ strategy. By talking about the interests of the upper castes, they are once again trying to solve the equation of 2007. While on one hand BJP’s firebrand leader Giriraj Singh is calling it ‘Sanatan’s victory’, on the other hand Mayawati has prepared her political pitch by linking it to ‘social justice and equality’.
