New Delhi: In an unprecedented scientific success, researchers have developed a contraceptive pill for men that are hormone-free and can effectively prevent sperm production. The name of this potential game-chain is YCT529 and is considered an important milestone in the field of male contraception.
Currently there are only a few contraception options available for men, with condoms and westeromy (sterilization). While condoms are temporary, westeromy is a permanent solution. Research is also going on on hormone-based male birth control pills, but there are concerns of hormonal side effects. The unique aspect of YCT529 is its hormone-free, making it an attractive option for those who want to avoid possible side effects associated with hormonal drugs.
It targets a protein called new tablet, YCT529, Retinoic acid receptor alpha (RAR-Alpha). This protein is necessary for the process of manufacturing sperm in men. The pill is designed in such a way that it can temporarily stop the production of sperm by blocking the Rar-Alpha protein, affecting the level of testosterone without testosterone. In early studies conducted on mice, YCT529 was shown high efficacy and no clear side effects.
Scientists are now preparing this pill for human clinical trials. If it proves to be equally effective and safe on humans, then it will not only give men more autonomy in controlling pregnancy, but can also bring revolution in family planning.
