News India Live, Digital Desk: Taking a shocking decision, the World Health Organization (WHO) has sent Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s daughter Simma Wazid on leave. Saima Vazed recently became the regional director of the South-East Asia Region (SEAR) of WHO, and the incident has come to light a few months after her assuming. With this unexpected step, WHO has kept his silence by saying ‘no further comment at this time’, causing many speculation.

Saima Vazed was elected as the Regional Director of the WHO South-East Asia region in October last year and took over in February this year. She replaced former director Poonam Khetrapal Singh, who held this post for almost a decade.

The incident occurred at a time when some concerns were being raised internationally about political and human rights related developments in Bangladesh, the native country of Cyma Vazes. The general elections in Bangladesh in January 2024 were engulfed in controversies, and some human rights groups raised questions about rigging and alleged violation of human rights in the electoral process. The US and Britain also imposed travel restrictions on Bangladeshi police and security officers, accusing them of alleged involvement in suppressing protests during elections.

However, the reason for sending Syima Vazes on leave is not explained. The WHO not giving any information on the matter reflects its sensitivity. Typically, there are concrete reasons behind such high-profile authorities being sent on leave, but the organization’s silence has made the whole matter more mysterious. This step has become a topic of discussion in the corridors of global health diplomacy, and all eyes are on the future statements of WHO and Cyma Vazed.
