Varanasi, September 03 (HS). A week-long suicide prevention awareness program will begin at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) on Wednesday, September 4. It will include various activities to spread awareness and information on the subject of suicide prevention. This campaign, which will run till September 10, will focus on expanding information and understanding through the participation of students from different levels, and will try to increase student welfare and community activism and sensitivity.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the University, poster making, open mic sessions, slogan writing, dialogue sessions, street plays and awareness programmes will be organised in the week-long programme. These activities are in line with the theme of World Suicide Prevention Day 2024 to change the prevailing perceptions about suicide and start a dialogue about it. This year's theme underlines the need to challenge the myths and misconceptions related to suicide and open dialogue. It also advocates sensible and collaborative dialogue instead of remaining silent in this regard.
The Public Relations Officer said that this campaign will see active participation of students of the main campus, southern campus and schools of Banaras Hindu University. This campaign, organized under the leadership of the Dean of Students, is being coordinated by the Co-Dean of Students (Student Welfare) and Student Counselor with the contribution of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Fellows. Through this campaign, students and the community will be informed about the signs of mental health and challenges, and the resources available to help deal with them. The members of the team involved in the organization believe that through this initiative, people can be encouraged to talk about this subject without hesitation by challenging the prevailing beliefs about mental health problems.
