Supreme Court: Demand for security audit from DGCA, petition against Air India

News India Live, Digital Desk: Supreme Court: Concerns have increased about the safety of Boeing aircraft included in Air India fleet. The matter has now reached the Supreme Court, the largest court in the country regarding these concerns. A lawyer has filed a PIL (PIL) in the Supreme Court demanding that all Boeing aircraft of Air India be stopped with immediate effect.

Why petition filed?

This petition has been filed by lawyer Alakh Alok Srivastava. He says that in recent times, Boeing aircraft of Air India and other international airlines have revealed many technical faults, which are a major threat to the safety of passengers. Some recent incidents have been mentioned in the petition, such as:

  • He had to return due to technical fault in Air India flight from Delhi to San Francisco.

  • Another flight led to the problem related to “flap”.

  • Apart from this, there have also been incidents such as engine fire and air conditioning (AC) unit not working.

The petition also cited the 2020 Kozhikode plane crash, in which many people lost their lives.

What has been demanded in the petition?

The petitioner has appealed to the court that they should not be allowed to fly until the safety of the aircraft is fully ensured. The petition mainly made three demands:

  1. Ban on flights: The entire Boeing fleet of Air India should be suspended until their security audit is completed.

  2. Security Audit: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) should be instructed to audit all the Boeing aircraft.

  3. Expert Committee Formation: An expert committee should be formed to analyze the risks related to aviation safety.

The petition states that Article 21 of the Constitution gives ‘right to life’ to all citizens. Traveling in unsafe aircraft is a direct violation of this fundamental right. This petition raises a serious issue related to the safety of millions of passengers and demands intervention from the court to prevent a major accident before it.
