Supreme Court: The Supreme Court had expressed doubt whether the government benefits received through the ration card are really reaching the needy people. He also questioned the dual policy of the states and said, “When state wants to show development, personal per capita income is shown high.” But the BPL population living below the poverty line, which is receiving subsidies, indicates 75 percent. The Supreme Court made this comment during the hearing on the issue of issuing ration cards to migrant laborers.
Ration cards are now becoming popular cards: Supreme Court
The case was heard by a bench headed by Justice Suryakant of the Supreme Court, during which Justice Suryakant said, “Our real concern is whether the benefits for the poor are actually being given to them or they are being given to those who are not entitled to them.” Ration cards are now becoming popularity cards. The Supreme Court held the hearing by taking self -cognizance during the Korona epidemic. It also included the rights of migrant laborers and the issue of government facilities.
Lawyer Prashant Bhushan, appearing for some petitioners, argued that, ‘Almost every government scheme has corruption at some level. Poor and are becoming more poor, while rich are becoming more rich. On the one hand some people have immense assets, on the other hand, per capita income of many people is very negligible compared to the total income of the state. Free ration should be provided to poor laborers registered under the government’s e -ram portal, the number of such people is about eight crores. The number of Ayushman beneficiaries has been increased without census data, but there has been no increase in the number of BPL card holders.
Supreme Court Justice Suryakant said, ‘I hope no political elements will be involved in providing ration cards to these people, I have not lost my roots yet, I have always tried to know about the plight of the poor. There are also families who remain poor.
Advocate Prashant Bhushan said, “The Central Government has not conducted a census in 2021 and the 2011 data is underway.” Due to which there are about 10 crore people who should get the benefit of free ration, but they are not included in BPL.
Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, introduced by the central government, said, “The government is providing free ration to 81.35 crore people.”
Justice Suryakant said, ‘The state is saying that we have issued so many ration cards, while some states want to show the development of their state, they say that per capita income is increasing in our state. When it comes to BPL, it is said that 75 percent of the population is BPL. Both these arguments have contradiction. Our concern is that the benefits really reach the poor.
The Supreme Court has recently sought a reply from the Center for free ration distribution and has asked to present the figure how many poor people have received free ration. Now this matter will be heard again. Thousands of people go to other states for work. However, they get the benefit of their ration card only in their original state. The hearing is going on on whether such migrant laborers should get the benefit of ration where they work.
