Do you also wonder while walking on the highway, why do pits on the streets so soon? Or why a highway remains for years? There is a big answer to these questions – the ‘honor’ of the contractors. But now this will not happen. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has now taken a huge and strict step to clamp down on the road -making contractors. Now no contractor will be able to save money by making small changes in the highway project and no one will be able to play with quality. What was it till now? (And why the roads were spoiled?) By now it used to be that even after the design of the highway project, the contractors often made small changes to increase their convenience and profits during work. For example, instead of a particular material, use a cheap material, or make a slight reshuffle in a bridge making technique. They used to call it “essential” or “needs of a site”, causing them to have economic benefits, but the strength and age of the road would be reduced. The result was – the roads used to deteriorate prematurely, accidents used to grow and there were long disputes with the government. What has changed the new rule? NHAI has now completely shut down this ‘Chor Door’. According to the new rules: Now ‘Manmani’ will not work: No contractor will be able to change even an inch of the project or design in the design, no matter how small it is. There will be many levels: If any change is really necessary, then only one official’s approval will not be enough for this. This proposal will have to go through several levels. From the project director to the regional officer and even a team of independent advisors will investigate it. All will be accountable: The accountability of the officer and expert approved at every level will be decided. No one will be able to approve the wrong decision easily. What is the benefit of you and us? Money will now be the right place and the expenses on repeated repair will be saved. Projects will be fulfilled: When the disputes are reduced, the highway and expressway projects will also be fulfilled fast. This is a step of NHAI, which will bring transparency in the construction of highway and will work better and safe roads to the country by banning the arbitrariness of contractors.
