Mythological story of Shani Pradosh fast
According to the legend, there lived a rich businessman in a city. He was very kind and pious. There was no dearth of wealth and prosperity in his life, but his only pain was that he had no children. In order to have a child, he and his wife used to observe fast on Har Pradosh.
In his neighbourhood, a poor Brahmin widow lived with her daughter-in-law, who was very polite and cultured. One day, the merchant’s wife, seeing the symptoms of her daughter-in-law, guessed that she was pregnant. She told this to her husband and brought her daughter-in-law to her home. He served him well. After some time, the daughter-in-law gave birth to a beautiful son.
The businessman raised that child as his own. When the boy grew up, the businessman fixed his marriage. Just before the marriage, Lord Shiva appeared in the businessman’s dream and said, “You have raised that child as your own, but the truth is that there is a possibility of his death.” The businessman got scared after hearing this. Lord Shiva advised him to observe the fast of Shani Pradosh.
The businessman observed the fast of Shani Pradosh with full devotion. When the Yamdoots came to take the child’s life, Lord Shiva himself appeared to protect him and sent the Yamdoots back. By the grace of Lord Shiva and Shani Dev, that child was blessed with a long life. It is believed that since then the importance of Shani Pradosh fast has increased even more.
Simple worship method for Shani Pradosh fast
- On this day, wake up early in the morning, take bath and wear clean clothes.
- Take a resolution to fast while meditating on Lord Shiva.
- Stay on fruits throughout the day and keep chanting the mantra “Om Namah Shivay” in your mind.
- In the evening, during the auspicious time of Pradosh Kaal, take bath again and prepare for the puja.
- Anoint Shivling with Ganga water, milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar.
- After this, offer Belpatra, Dhatura, hemp, white sandalwood and flowers to Bholenath.
- Light a ghee lamp and incense sticks.
- Read the fast story and at the end do Shiv Chalisa and Aarti of Lord Shiva.
- After the puja, distribute the prasad and then break your fast.
This fast not only provides relief from Shani Dosh, but is also considered good for having children, promotion in job and fulfillment of every wish.
