The houses where smart meters are installed are now inundated with defaulters. It is reported that the electricity of 3695 consumers who have not paid their electricity bills have been disconnected, who had not recharged their prepaid or had not deposited the dues for a long time. This action is a lesson to those who do not pay bills on time.

What is the wonder of smart meter?

The biggest advantage of smart meter is that it records electricity consumption digitally and also provides prepaid facility to the consumers. This means that you have to recharge your meter in advance (prepaid recharge), just like you recharge your mobile phone. If the recharge ends, the power is automatically cut off, as has happened with the 3695 defaulters in this case.

This step has been taken by Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL) to reduce electricity theft and revenue losses. After the installation of smart meters, it has now become easier to identify defaulters and take action against them. People whose electricity has been cut will not only have to pay the outstanding bills but may also have to pay additional charges to get the connection again.
