Kolkata, June 04 (HS). Along with the whole of Bengal, BJP's hopes have also suffered a setback in North 24 Patna's Basirhat Lok Sabha seat. The way the party had created an atmosphere at the national level on the Sandeshkhali issue here, its benefit is not visible in the Lok Sabha elections.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was hoping that the Sandeshkhali incident would send a strong political message in the Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency but its hopes appear to have been dashed as BJP candidate Rekha Patra was trailing behind Trinamool Congress veteran Haji Nurul Islam by a margin of nearly two lakh votes.
Alleged incidents of sexual harassment of local women and forceful occupation of land in Sandeshkhali, one of the seven assembly seats falling under the Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency, appear to have failed to give the BJP the desired win on the seat.
According to election experts, for the voters of Basirhat constituency, located on the international border with Bangladesh, the Sandeshkhali issue was too local to make an impact.
